Literature is a world in itself. The term has millions of definitions and meanings, keeping different perspectives in mind. It is basically a recognized art of written words that is equipped with artistic values. Each word holds a particular meaning in itself and all these words combine together to form a sentence or phrase. Thousands of phrases form a page, and these pages merge together to form a book. That's literature for you. Literature can be in the form of a brochure, a text, a newspaper, a magazine, poems, stories and no matter what! It generally means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter).
There are two divisions of the term: one is oral or spoken and the other one is the printed or written literature. Remember those times, when grandmas used to recite stories and poems? These are the examples of oral literature that further gave rise to the written format. Literature plays a very significant role in curving our society in the best possible way. Books are responsible for implementing the true values in mankind. Some of the forms of Literature are: Poems, Novels, Essays, Fiction,Non Fiction, Prose, Drama and Oral literature (poetry, jokes, etc.). Literature is anything that utilizes the written word. So you don't have to be a literature student to read those interesting novels at all. Just pick up your favorite collection from a store and get indulged in the world of romanticism, horror, fiction and non-fiction.
