You can say that bearings are a result of the advancement in technology. But do you know that they were also present at the time of Stone age as well? You have not read all these things in your history books. Of course those bearings were not as advanced as they are right now, but of course, they existed at that point as well. It is mainly a device that is used to allow constrained relative motion between two parts, typically rotation or linear movement. We won't go much into the technical terms at all. Essentially, a bearing plays a very important role in reducing the overall friction by virtue of its shape, by its material, or with the help of a fluid that is introduced between several surfaces. Here, in this section, we shall try our level best to provide you with all kinds of resources that are linked with bearings.
Common motions of bearings are:
- Axial rotation e.g. shaft rotation
- Linear motion e.g. drawer
- spherical rotation e.g. ball and socket joint
- hinge motion e.g. door
It was not long back, when the bearings used to consist of just two rolls and a rocker plate, and was known as movable ball rocker bearing. The functions were of course the same.
