Proofreading and editing are the two different stages of revision process of writing. However, often many people do use both these terms interchangeably, but the fact is that they are different, while both involve careful reading of texts.
Editing can be done at various levels of writing your text, depending on the degree of assistance you require (you can start it right after you finish your first draft). This process involves re-reading of your draft to make sure if it is well-organized, along with various aspects. It may involve extensive rewriting of sentences as well as smaller elements of the text.
Whereas, proofreading is identified as the final stage of writing, which involves correction of grammatical mistakes, spellings and punctuation. While editing involves a few major changes, but proofreading involves only minor changes, particularly in spelling and punctuation. Both the process employ specific techniques.
