People often use the terms real estate agent or Realtor interchangeably, but they both are different. Real estate agent is the person with a license to sell real estate, but not every agent who sells real estate can call himself or herself a Realtor. A Realtor is a real estate professional, who is a member of the national, state or local boards of Realtors adhering to strict code of ethics. To be a good Realtor, a person should have- the experience and understanding of the real estate market beyond what you can look alone in certain period of time; the knowledge and skills to guide his clients into the right neighborhood; and the professional experience to handle all the aspects of an offer, negotiating, and closing process.
A Realtor helps you in following ways:
- He helps you find the perfect match between what you can afford and the home that meets your specific needs.
- He can access all the properties for sale in your desired area through the Multiple Listing Service.
- He negotiates for you. Once you have decided on what to buy, your Realtor will write up your offer and present it to the seller.
- A Realtor knows the real estate market inside and out, and thus helps you in getting the best price possible, whether you are buying or selling.
