Regional is derived from the term, “region” that depicts a a medium-scale area of land or water, that is in general much smaller than the actual area with which it is compared. For example, the southern part of India is a region as compared to the whole country India! A region can be a land, it can be a part of a water body. Sometimes it can be a larger area than a specific site or location. It all depends in the context in which we are looking at the situation.

It can be termed as a collection of diverse small units (as in "the Indian states") or as one part of a larger whole (as in "Goa region of India"). Regions are areas and/or the spaces that are used in the study of a map. That is why it is very important to understand the overall concept of region, to know about diverse branches of geography. That particular faculty of geography that deals with regions is known as Regional geography.

One of the categories of “region” is known as “eco-regions” that is very often used in environmental geography, cultural region in cultural geography, bioregion in Biogeography, and so on.
